MSME Registration
Udyam Registration India
Complete assistance for MSME Udyam Registration in India — from classification guidance and registration support to MSME benefits advisory and post-registration compliance, for micro, small and medium enterprises.
What is MSME Registration in India?
MSME registration — currently known as Udyam Registration — is the official process by which micro, small and medium enterprises register with the Government of India. It is governed by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act 2006 and administered through the Udyam Registration Portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) by the Ministry of MSME.
A registered enterprise receives a unique Udyam Registration Number and a permanent Udyam Registration Certificate — which does not require renewal. The certificate is recognized by banks, government agencies and procurement authorities as proof of MSME status.
MSME registration is not mandatory under the Act, but registration is required to access the benefits, protections and schemes available to MSMEs — including priority sector lending, delayed payment protections, government procurement preferences and various Central and State government support schemes.
At Ingenious IP LLP, we assist businesses in understanding their correct MSME classification, completing the Udyam Registration process accurately and advising on the benefits available to them as registered MSMEs.
MSME Classification Criteria (Revised 2020)
As per the revised MSME classification effective from 1 July 2020, enterprises are classified based on both investment in plant and machinery or equipment AND annual turnover. Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously for the relevant category.

We advise businesses on their correct MSME classification — micro, small or medium — based on their investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover, as per the revised criteria effective 1 July 2020. Correct classification is important to ensure the enterprise accesses the benefits applicable to its actual MSME category.

MSME Benefits Advisory
We advise MSME-registered businesses on the benefits and schemes available under Central and State government programs — including priority sector lending, credit guarantee schemes, delayed payment protection under the MSMED Act 2006 and sector-specific government support schemes.
GeM & Government Procurement Advisory
Registered MSMEs are eligible for preferences in Government e-Marketplace (GeM) procurement and public tenders. We advise businesses on GeM registration, MSME-specific procurement provisions and how to leverage MSME status in government supply opportunities.
Delayed Payment Support
Under Sections 15 and 16 of the MSMED Act 2006, buyers must pay MSME suppliers within the agreed credit period — not exceeding 45 days from acceptance of goods or services. We advise MSME businesses on their legal rights under these provisions and on the available dispute resolution mechanisms including the MSME Samadhaan portal.
Udyam Registration Process
The Udyam Registration process is fully online and based on self-declaration — no physical documents or certificates are required to be uploaded during registration.
Visit the Udyam Registration Portal
Registration is completed online at the official Udyam Registration Portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) managed by the Ministry of MSME. For new registrations, select "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME or those with EM-II". For migration from old Udyog Aadhaar registration, a separate migration section is available on the portal.
Aadhaar Verification
The registration process begins with Aadhaar-based identity verification of the proprietor (for sole proprietorships), managing partner (for partnerships and LLPs) or authorized signatory (for companies). An OTP is sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number for authentication. For companies and LLPs, the GSTIN and PAN of the entity are also required.
PAN & GSTIN Linking
The portal automatically retrieves financial data — investment and turnover — from the Income Tax and GSTIN databases using the PAN and GSTIN of the enterprise. Enterprises that are not required to obtain GSTIN may be exempt from this requirement subject to applicable conditions and the nature of their business activity.
Enterprise Details & NIC Code Selection
The applicant provides details of the enterprise — including name, type of organization, bank details, main activity (manufacturing or services) and the relevant National Industry Classification (NIC) codes corresponding to the enterprise's business activities. Accurate NIC code selection is important as it determines the sector classification and applicable schemes.
Submission & Udyam Registration Certificate
Upon final submission of the self-declaration form, the enterprise receives a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a Udyam Registration Certificate via email. The certificate is permanent — it does not require periodic renewal — and serves as official proof of MSME status for all purposes including banking, government procurement and regulatory compliance.
Benefits of MSME Udyam Registration
Udyam-registered enterprises are eligible for the following benefits — subject to applicable eligibility conditions, scheme terms and the policies of the relevant authority at the time of application.
Priority Sector Lending & Collateral-Free Loans
MSMEs are classified under priority sector lending by the Reserve Bank of India. Registered MSMEs may access collateral-free credit through the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme — which provides credit guarantees to member lending institutions extending collateral-free loans to eligible MSMEs.
Delayed Payment Protection
Under Sections 15 and 16 of the MSMED Act 2006, buyers are required to pay MSME suppliers within the agreed credit period — not exceeding 45 days from acceptance. If not paid on time, buyers are liable to pay compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate on the outstanding amount.
Government Procurement Preferences
MSME-registered businesses enjoy preferences in Central Government procurement — including mandatory procurement from MSMEs of a specified percentage of goods and services, exemptions from earnest money deposits in certain tenders, and access to the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
IP Fee Concessions
MSME-registered enterprises are eligible for rebates on patent and trademark filing fees with the Indian Patent Office and Trade Marks Registry — as per the applicable fee schedules. The concession rates are prescribed by the respective IP offices and may be updated from time to time.
Technology & Quality Support Schemes
Registered MSMEs may access various Central Government technology upgradation and quality certification support schemes — including support for obtaining national and international quality certifications, technology modernization and cluster development programmes administered by the Ministry of MSME.
MSME Samadhaan — Dispute Resolution
Registered MSMEs can file applications for delayed payment disputes against buyers through the MSME Samadhaan portal — online filing of cases with the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council (MSEFC) for conciliation and arbitration of payment disputes under the MSMED Act 2006.
MSME Registration FAQ
Accurate answers to frequently asked questions about Udyam Registration and MSME benefits in India.
Udyam Registration is the official MSME registration process in India — administered through the Udyam Registration Portal by the Ministry of MSME. Any enterprise — whether a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company — that meets the classification criteria for micro, small or medium enterprise under the MSMED Act 2006 can register. Registration is not mandatory but is required to access MSME benefits, schemes and legal protections.
As per the revised MSME classification effective 1 July 2020, based on both investment and annual turnover:
Micro: Investment up to INR 1 crore AND turnover up to INR 5 crore.
Small: Investment up to INR 10 crore AND turnover up to INR 50 crore.
Medium: Investment up to INR 50 crore AND turnover up to INR 250 crore.
Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously. An enterprise exceeding the limit for one criterion may be classified in the higher category.
Udyam Registration is based entirely on self-declaration — no documents or certificates are required to be uploaded during registration. The portal uses the Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or authorized signatory for identity verification, and automatically retrieves investment and turnover data from the Income Tax and GSTIN databases using the enterprise's PAN and GSTIN.
No. The Udyam Registration Certificate is permanent and does not require periodic renewal. However, the enterprise must update its Udyam Registration if there is a change in relevant details — such as a change in business activity, investment level or turnover that affects its MSME classification. If an enterprise exceeds the prescribed classification limits, it ceases to be an MSME and may lose eligibility for MSME-specific benefits.
Under Section 15 of the MSMED Act 2006, a buyer is required to make payment to an MSME supplier within the agreed credit period — which cannot exceed 45 days from the day of acceptance of goods or services.
Under Section 16, if payment is not made within this period, the buyer is liable to pay compound interest with monthly rests on the outstanding amount at three times the bank rate notified by the Reserve Bank of India. Disputes can be filed through the MSME Samadhaan portal for resolution by the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council.
